No surprise that physical activity is the key to health
There’s no doubt that being physically active maintains health and wellbeing at any age.
Current guidelines recommend older Australians engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, if not all days.
However, according to the 2017-2018 Australian National Health Survey, less than one third of people aged over 65 are doing the recommended amount of physical activity.
This couldn’t be further from the truth for 80-year-old Fatima Allie, who is the picture of vitality and healthy independence.
Previously a registered nurse who worked in a nursing home for 23 years, Fatima observed the decline of patients and dedicated herself to staying well.
The octogenarian plays golf three times a week at Medway Golf Club where she has been a member for 24 years. It was here she first heard about Rivervue Retirement Village – across the tee from the 14th hole.
“I ended up buying an apartment in the village,” Fatima says.
“The balcony is big enough to entertain 20 people in the summer, and I overlook the Maribyrnong River and golf course.”
Rivervue is an ideal solution to help people remain active and independent as they age.
Residents have access to the indoor heated pool and spa, and modern gymnasium, along with various activities offered throughout the week.
“You cannot get bored,” says Fatima of her active social life, enjoying happy hour, indoor bowls, table tennis and aqua aerobics within the village.
“It’s a different lifestyle than when you live on your own. There’s so much going on.”
Neighborhood walkability also makes exercise more accessible to older adults, with Fatima enjoying the convenience of a bus stop right outside, a tram stop within walking distance to easily get into the city, and even her 20-minute walk to Highpoint Shopping Centre.
“I walk to Coles, the post office, to my doctors. It’s so easy with everything around you,” she says.
Fatima’s advice for ageing well is no surprise.
“Stay active; keep stretching and exercising. And try not to sit at home alone; get yourself out and meet people just for a chat.”
