Active Aging: The Best Exercises for Over 50's
As we gracefully glide into our golden years, it's essential to prioritise our health and wellness. While physical activity might conjure images of intense workouts and competitive sports, staying active as a senior doesn't have to be daunting. In fact, there's a plethora of sports and activities perfectly suited for over 50's, offering not just physical benefits, but also mental and social enrichment.
Here are our favourites:
1. Lawn Bowls
Lawn bowls is fantastic if you love to be outdoors and like the idea of participating in a laid-back sport with a healthy dose of teamwork and some competitive fun. What makes lawn bowls particularly appealing is its low-impact nature, making it gentle on joints while still providing all the benefits of physical activity. Lawn bowls is a social sport, offering ample opportunities for friendly banter and forming lasting connections with fellow bowlers.
Our bowling green is a great place to practice, whether you’re an avid enthusiast or trying it for the first time. We have a number of bowling residents who teach non-bowlers how to play, and we also host barefoot bowls events every now and again for a bit of fun.
2. Swimming
If you’re seeking a full-body workout without putting stress on your joints, swimming is the perfect solution. Whether it's a leisurely backstroke or an invigorating lap session, swimming offers numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, increased muscle strength, and enhanced flexibility. The water reduces risk of injury, making it an excellent choice if you have arthritis or joint and mobility issues. Plus, there's something serene about being in the water, making swimming not only a physical activity, but also a wellness experience.
At Rivervue, we have an indoor heated pool available for use between 7am and 9pm daily. When you’re done swimming laps, you can soak your muscles in the spa – the perfect way to start or end your day.
3. Water Aerobics
If you like being in the water but want to try something different than swimming, water aerobics is a fantastic choice. This low-impact workout utilises the resistance of water to strengthen muscles and boost cardiovascular health. The buoyancy of water reduces strain on joints, so you can get your heart rate up without the impact.
There are plenty of opportunities to join in on an aqua exercise class at our heated indoor pool. Plus, these classes are the perfect way to socialise and have fun with your fellow Rivervue neighbours.
4. Yoga and Tai Chi
Yoga and Tai Chi are ancient practices that have stood the test of time for good reason. Both disciplines focus on gentle movements, controlled breathing, and mindfulness, making them ideal if you’re looking to focus on your balance, flexibility, and mental wellbeing.
Our Activity Centre is home to our weekly tai chi, pilates and yoga classes, providing a convenient opportunity for residents to stretch and unwind.
5. Cycling
Cycling is an excellent sport for seniors keen on exploring the great outdoors while reaping the benefits of cardiovascular exercise. Whether it's a leisurely ride around the neighbourhood or a scenic trail adventure, cycling provides a low-impact workout that improves cardiovascular health and strengthens leg muscles.
Our River Garden is the perfect place to pedal, and offers convenient access to the Maribyrnong River track for even bigger exercise sessions.
6. Walking
Last but certainly not least, walking remains one of the simplest yet most effective forms of exercise for seniors. Whether it's a brisk power walk or a leisurely stroll, walking offers a host of health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, strengthened bones, and reduced stress levels. The best part – it's accessible, affordable, and can be easily integrated into your daily routine.
There’s no prettier place to reach your step count than our expansive and meticulously maintained gardens.
